Number of the Day: 52 percent of state legislators in the U.S. are Republicans

October 8, 2020: Next month’s elections are about more than what happens in Washington. State legislative elections will be held throughout the nation.

Currently, 52% of the nation’s 7,383 state legislators are Republicans and 47% are Democrats.[1]

There are 99 state legislative chambers in the U.S. (two in every state but Nebraska). Republicans hold a majority in 59 of them while Democrats control 39. In Alaska, there is a power-sharing agreement between the two parties.[1]
