PRESS RELEASE:
Colorado Springs, Colorado - It began with the news that Hope Hicks had contracted COVID-19. Then we learned that President Trump and first lady Melania Trump had fallen ill. Over the following nights a pattern emerged of infection endemic to Republican leadership in Washington; last night, we learned that two staffers in Congressman Lamborn’s DC office tested positive for COVID-19 . Two Lamborn employees told reporter Conrad Swanson that Lamborn’s Chief of Staff, Dale Anderson, suggested they not tell their roommates about their positive COVID-19 test results.
As a healthcare provider, I know the risks of coronavirus and the commonsense methods of reducing transmission and tracing contacts. When people get sick, we contact the individuals who have come into contact with them to trace the infection. This is a simple public health procedure used with any communicable disease, and it’s especially important with a disease as deadly and contagious as COVID-19. Suggesting that these sick employees withhold their illness from the people they live with is immoral and dangerous. Will Congressman Lamborn be holding his Chief of Staff accountable for this egregious violation of the well-being of the employee and utter disregard for public health?
We then learned that Congressman Lamborn was at a fundraiser for CO-6 Republican nominee Steve House on Tuesday evening; a photo by former Secretary of State Wayne Williams showed no masks in sight. It is exactly this type of behavior- insistence on denying the science and putting personal desires before the common good - that has increased the spread of this disease and killed more than 210,000 Americans and more than a million people worldwide. People like President Trump and Congressman Lamborn have excellent healthcare, so when they behave recklessly and get sick they will likely be ok. The problem is, Americans are looking at their actions as a guide for what is safe. Our leaders need to be modeling the behavior that will save the lives of our friends and neighbors; mingling with donors is far less important than protecting our loved ones. Managing a public image is nowhere near as important as the health of our civil servants and communities.
My campaign staff is working remotely and we are not holding any in-person rallies or fundraisers. Wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, a short-term shutdown, and localized quarantines have made Colorado one of the lowest infection rates per capita in the nation, and my campaign endeavors to model these simple and effective measures to keep Colorado and the nation healthy and safe.
COVID is real. Stay home. If you cannot stay home, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wash your hands!
