Dear CV Friend,

First Things Editor R.R. Reno just called my new book
"remarkable."

The book is titled Donald Trump and the Politics of the Common
Good.

As Reno notes, any Catholic book on Trump will emphasize social
issues like abortion, religious freedom, and protecting the
family.

And it's all there. Catholics who were skeptical of Trump in
2016 have good reason to be enthused over the President's record
on these fundamental issues during his first term in office.

But Reno also notes that the book aims to inform Catholics on the
ways in which President Trump's policies serve the Catholic
principle of solidarity. Far too often we are told only
so-called "social justice" Catholics care about solidarity. But
properly understood, from trade to immigration, patriotism and
economics, President Trump's policies are helping reinvigorate
this foundational principle of Catholic social teaching in
America.

From Reno's review:

[T]here is something new in Donald Trump and the Politics of the
Common Good. The Introduction and Conclusion adopt an unabashedly
populist tone. The Clinton-Bush-Obama years are described as
captive to a neo-liberal consensus that "championed a
frictionless global capitalism overseen by transnational
expert-led institutions." This consensus has done great damage.
"The 'winners' of the economic system built to facilitate
globalization effectively treat their working-class fellow
citizens as expendable, as cogs in a worn-out machine that is
being discarded."

You and I both agree that fighting to protect unborn children is
the highest priority. As our Bishops have said so clearly, it's
the "preeminent" issue of our day.

I agree with that 100%.

But I also believe that pro-life Catholics shouldn't view the
abortion issue in isolation. We need a government that
understands the priorities of rebuilding a culture of life. This
means tax breaks not merely for big corporations, but for
families too. And economic and immigration policies that
prioritize American workers. And of course, a national culture
that is proud to defend the idea of America -- not merely as a
marketplace, but as a political community dedicated to higher,
noble ideals.

It's been said that this election is about preserving our
American way of life.

That's what this book is about. We can't pretend to preserve the
best of American culture and ideas while denouncing our Founding,
tearing down our statues, kneeling in protest against the flag,
and ignoring the plight of the working class.

Voters understand this. And if Trump wins in November, it will
be this innate sense of protecting the America we love that will
fuel record turnout from the silent majority.

The book concludes this way:

"...2020 really is an election in which the fate of our country
hangs in the balance...for Catholics exercising their prudence in
light of all the facts, the decision of whom to vote for in 2020
is not a close call."

"President Donald J. Trump is Catholics' only choice."
