John,
On September 26, a little over a week after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed, President Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace her on the United States Supreme Court. Even though Mitch McConnell held Justice Scalia's seat vacant for 293 days in 2016, citing proximity to the election, Mitch McConnell now says the Senate will confirm Judge Barrett just weeks before the presidential election -- despite the fact that millions of Americans have already voted in more than half of the states.
In recent days two members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and several White House staffers have tested positive for COVID-19. Still, McConnell plans to go "full steam ahead" with the confirmation process. This will put the health of Senators, their staff, and Capitol employees at great risk of exposure.
Not only is this a shocking power grab and blatant attempt to pack the Court, but rushing Judge Barrett's confirmation reflects a disregard for the American people.
Judge Barrett has written publicly that she believes the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional and signed a letter calling for the end of Roe v. Wade. With Judge Barrett on the Court, there would be enough conservative justices to make this a reality.
The fate of the Affordable Care Act and Roe v. Wade are at stake, and the American people deserve a say in what happens. Add your name to demand Mitch McConnell halt the confirmation process until after Inauguration Day >>
Justice Ginsburg's last wish was that her replacement not be selected until a new president was sworn in. We owe it to her to honor that wish, and we owe it to ourselves to let the American people have their voices heard about the issues at stake in this vacancy.
Please, add your name now to honor Justice Ginsburg's legacy and give the American people the right to have our voices heard. Sign our petition today.
Thank you,
Team Coons
