It’s no secret that Trump has disregarded public health experts throughout the course of this pandemic. As early as March, Trump told Bob Woodward he “didn’t have a lot of time” to meet with Dr. Anthony Fauci, according to newly released audio.
If there isn’t time to meet with the nation’s leading infectious disease expert during a global pandemic, we at Progressive Majority would like to ask: What was there time for? Per Trump’s behavior, there was plenty of time to downplay the danger of a deadly virus in order to protect his image.
Now, 7 months later, 210,000+ Americans are dead, millions of jobs have been lost without hope of recovery, and the global standing of the United States has been greatly diminished -- all thanks to Trump’s refusal to make time for science.
A lot of Americans (68% of them, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos survey) say they don’t trust what Trump says about the pandemic -- but Republicans do, and Republicans VOTE. Trump has been twisting Dr. Fauci’s statements about mask guidance, taking them out of context in order to tank the credibility of experts. If he manages to bamboozle swing state voters into thinking he’s the only one who can be trusted, we’re in deep trouble.
Look, you know we need Democrats in Washington who will listen to scientists and protect the American people at this most dire point in our nation’s history. But right now, we’re falling short of the funds we need to make that happen. We need to raise another $3,843 by midnight to fight the misinformation being spread by Donald Trump and elect progressive candidates who will see to it that our country survives this pandemic and heeds the advice of experts going forward.
