Friend –
Did you know that over 200 anti-LGBTQ laws were active in state legislatures in 2020 alone – dozens of which sought to ban transgender people from playing athletics?
And just as the country was shutting down to face the realities of COVID-19, Idaho lawmakers stayed in session to pass a sweeping ban on transgender athletes participating in school sports – specifically targeting women and girls who are transgender and intersex.
Now, in a state where such a blatantly discriminatory law is on the books, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is scheduled to hold the 2021 Men's Basketball Tournament, better known as "March Madness." It's time we all take action. <[link removed]>
Here's our plan: The NCAA Board of Governors will meet soon on October 28. As the ACLU and its partners fight this unconstitutional law in court, we need your help pressuring the NCAA to do what's right: Sign our petition today to tell the NCAA to move all championship games out of Idaho until its anti-trans sports bill is gone for good. <[link removed]>
Take Action <[link removed]>
ACLU Supporter, state lawmakers have been introducing legislation to push trans people out of public spaces for years. In 2020, they've zeroed in on sports with the support of coordinated online ad campaigns led by anti-LGBTQ groups – spreading hateful misinformation about trans people and hoping it may serve as a wedge issue in this election year.
What happens with this law in Idaho could have a ripple effect. If HB 500 remains, lawmakers in other states may follow suit with similar laws. But if we raise enough public outcry, we'll send a strong message that anti-trans legislation will not be accepted – and that trans people belong everywhere, including sports.
So let's make sure they hear us, ACLU Supporter. The NCAA has moved tournaments in the past, including halting events due to an anti-trans bill in North Carolina in 2016. And the organization has already spoken out against Idaho's discriminatory law this year.
With enough pressure, we can ensure they put their words into action once again. Please add your name to our petition before the next NCAA Board of Governors meeting. <[link removed]>
