Pete here. I’m writing to warn you about a little-known loophole Trump could use to steal the election -- and how we can stop him before it’s too late.
We’ve already seen Trump openly admit he’s going to try to use the Supreme Court to override the votes of the American people. But there’s another scheme he’s been cooking up in the shadows: using a loyalist GOP governor or state secretary to block state electoral votes for Joe Biden, even if Biden wins the popular vote in that state (technically allowed under the rules of the electoral college.)
The blocked votes wouldn’t count toward Trump, they would just go to no one -- meaning both candidates could fall short of the 270 electoral college votes needed to win. Per the 12th Amendment, the election would then be decided by a vote of state delegations in the new House of Representatives in 2021. While we currently hold a progressive majority in the House, we do NOT hold a majority of state delegations. That means Republicans could give the presidency to Trump, even if he loses the election.
There’s one way to stop this ploy before it starts: we MUST protect and expand our House majority, especially in crucial states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Montana, and Alaska. That would give us the state delegations we would need to secure the election for Biden -- and hold Trump accountable to the will of the American people.
But these races are TIGHT, friend. They’ll get even tighter as Republicans get more desperate and begin pouring all the money they have into holding onto power by any means necessary. That’s why we’re starting a Progressive Majority Firewall Fund to give our candidates the resources they need to win -- and give our democracy the shield it needs to survive.
We’d like to raise an additional $2,429 by midnight tonight to flip these crucial delegations and stop this despicable plot in its tracks.
