News and Updates Wisconsin State Journal: Northwestern Wisconsin Judge Considering Striking Down Statewide Mask Mandate St. Croix County Judge R. Michael Waterman heard arguments Monday afternoon but declined to rule immediately from the bench. Judge Issues Injunction: Madison School District Staff Cannot Lie to Parents About Gender Transitions at School Dane County Circuit Court Judge Frank Remington issued an injunction last week in a WILL parental rights lawsuit that forbids Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) employees from lying to parents about the gender identity that their child may have adopted at school. The lawsuit is ongoing, but the injunction goes into effect immediately as the case is under consideration. Read more here. WILL Amicus: State Legislature Should Have Standing to Defend State Law When Attorney General Doesn't Defend It "The Seventh Circuit’s holding, if this Court agrees with it, poses an existential threat to the separation-of-powers principles our state and country are founded upon. The effect of the Seventh Circuit’s interpretation of Wisconsin law is to allow the Attorney General and/or unelected state bureaucrats to function as a mini legislature, nullifying laws they disagree with through concession or half-hearted defense." Read more here. UPDATE: The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday afternoon the legislature does have standing to defend state law in this case. Test-Optional Admissions Policies Hurt the Populations They Intend to Help WILL intern Jillian Ludwig writes on the consequences of a decision by the UW-Madison to scrap the ACT and SAT in admissions through 2023. Ludwig writes, "Instead of scrapping imperfect measures completely, colleges should evaluate the weight they assign to any one measure and demand more accurate assessments from testing agencies and high schools alike to achieve fairer standards."
