Dear John,

We could all use some good news. Here at As You Sow, we work to compel corporations toward actions that are good news, not part of the problem.

Here’s some good news for you today —

Hot Off the Press
After engagement with As You Sow,

Morgan Stanley announced it will take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions from projects the bank finances, a major step forward toward a climate-safe world. By adopting net zero targets for its financed emissions, Morgan Stanley sets a best-practice standard for other banks, and sends the message to all businesses that access to capital increasingly will depend on reducing emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

General Electric announced it will exit from coal projects in the new power market. We’ve been working with GE, including through resolutions and multiple calls, to encourage them away from coal. This action is an important shift facilitating the low-carbon energy transition.

#1 Corporate Watchdog!
Ethos named As You Sow #1 out of 30 on its “Top Corporate Watchdogs” list. The list highlights the best independent sources of information on corporate impact and we’re thrilled to be at the top — confirmation that As You Sow punches well above our weight. Ethos’ criteria included independence, analytical rigor, breadth of issues covered, and reach — all big elements in why we so consistently deliver results.

More 2020 Engagement Results
As You Sow is at the forefront of pressure to create a true stakeholder economy across multiple industries and sectors.

Diversity Disclosure: We withdrew an astounding seven resolutions when the companies — including Morgan Stanley, MetLife, and MasterCard — agreed to publish annual reports assessing their internal diversity and inclusion efforts. Reports will include promotion, recruitment, retention metrics, and trends — establishing a firm base for holding companies accountable on gender equity and racial justice.

Pesticide Use: JM Smuckers, Campbells, Kelloggs and GeneralMills all made significant promises to tackle pesticide use in their supply chains.

Climate Change: Major financial institutions including Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs committed to take steps to assess methodologies for measuring their full carbon footprint, including from their loan portfolios.

Climate Change: Bank of America, Citibank, and Morgan Stanley agreed to measure their financed emissions and disclose them as a first step toward setting greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Climate Change: Hertz committed to work with us on strategies to advance adoption of Electric Vehicles in its fleet.

Climate Change and Funding: JP Morgan, the world’s largest fossil fuel funder, and Goldman Sachs announced policies to stop funding Arctic oil & gas projects, increase restrictions on coal funding, and increase funding for sustainable projects.

Majority Votes: We earned an unprecedented four majority votes this season — 55% at Phillips 66 on petrochemical plants in flood zones; 61% at Fastenal, 66% at O’Reilly Auto Parts, and 79% at Genuine Parts on Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB)-based disclosures.

Recyclability: Kroger, following years of dialogues and shareholder votes pressing the nation’s largest grocery chain to make its packaging 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable, agreed to do so in August.

Single-Use Plastic Phase-out: Starbucks agreed to shift from single-use to re-usable packaging, and to conduct unprecedented research to promote customer behavior change, develop reusable container goals, and cut its global packaged waste 50% by 2030.

Polystyrene Foam Waste: YUM! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut) agreed to end the use of foam packaging globally by 2022. YUM! is the world’s largest quick service restaurant company.

Plastic Waste: Westlake Chemical, Occidental Petroleum, and Huntsman Corp agreed to report on pre-production plastic pellets (“nurdles,” the 2nd largest direct source of micro plastic pollution to the ocean), following similar commitments to As You Sow by Exxon, Chevron, and Phillips 66.

We’ll make sure these announcements are followed by concrete action. Together, we are creating real change in the world.

Hope you are staying safe and well,

Andrew Behar
