Dear John,
The last few weeks have felt like one blow after another. The devastating wildfires. The heartbreaking loss of Justice Ginsburg. The continued injustice surrounding the killing of Breonna Taylor. The Trump Administration’s moves to end Temporary Protected Status, and the looming deportation of 300,000 people who came to this country fleeing war and natural disasters.
Yet even now, there are leaders who are turning all this pain into purpose. Nonprofits are opening their doors to families that have been displaced by the wildfires. Teachers are going to extraordinary lengths to keep their students connected. Community groups are fighting for the rights of immigrants.
At CZI, we are proud to stand with these organizations—and to stand up for a future defined not by pain, but by progress.

Education
At Van Ness Elementary, teaching emotional skills is just as important as teaching academic skills. Watch how the school incorporates social and emotional learning into their curriculum so that students feel safe and connected ([link removed]).

The U.S. is home to hundreds of thousands of people who have fled natural disasters and violence in other countries, from Haiti to Sudan to Yemen. They’re at risk of losing their humanitarian protections—and leaders like Marleine Bastien are stepping up to help ([link removed]).

Science
In 1988, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County came up with a new way to increase diversity in their STEM programs. It’s been an amazing success ([link removed]) —and now, CZI is working to bring the model to more schools.

Black Americans are facing a “triple pandemic ([link removed]) ” of COVID-19, economic stress, and racial terror. One San Francisco Bay Area CZI grant partner is providing support on all fronts.
