John –
If you or your friends want to help decide the future, you only have a few days left to register to vote in District of Columbia. It’s not just the presidential election. State and local elected officials can make our lives way better or mess them up completely.
The deadline to register to vote by mail in District of Columbia is 🗳️ Oct. 13, and Nov. 3 for in person registration🗳️.
(Did we get your state wrong? Click here to fix it and get your state’s deadlines.)
Super important: You need to register by the deadline. You can’t just show up and try to vote on Election Day without registering. If you want to vote early or vote by mail-in or drop-off absentee ballot, you need to be registered first. Click here for everything you need to know about voting this year.
Why vote? The people closest to the pain should have the biggest voice in the solutions. People who survived this broken criminal justice system should have a say in designing a better one. Black, brown, and low-income communities should be coding apps and algorithms, not just downloading them or getting hit by their blind spots. The people who suffer the most from the climate crisis should benefit the most from climate solutions that will usher in a new, green economy.
Millions of people cannot vote – people with felony convictions, immigrants brought here as children, young people who will live with the climate crisis their whole lives. Now, voter suppression, violence, and partisan gimmicks threaten the results and the peaceful transition of power.
We owe it to those who cannot vote to cast our votes and to defend the sanctity of the ballot box. Democracy itself demands it.

P.S. — If you plan to vote by mail / absentee, you need to request a ballot even if you are registered already. Go here to check the deadline to request a ballot in the District of Columbia.
