Dear John,
In recent weeks, as politicians and others have stepped up attacks on the extraordinary 1619 Project, national attention has turned to the question of what history we owe to young people. At Teaching Tolerance, we believe that students deserve the truth.
Recognizing the ways that American enslavement and dispossession continue to shape our lives is a critical first step in working to address oppressive systems still in place. And students deserve an accurate reckoning of that legacy.
That’s why Teaching Tolerance is proud to present our newest resource, The Forgotten Slavery of Our Ancestors. The short film for grades 6-12 introduces the history of Indigenous enslavement on land that is now the United States and those working to recover that history. The film is the latest resource for our Teaching Hard History: American Slavery project.
In honor of this new film, we’re hosting a panel and Q&A with the filmmakers Wednesday, October 7, at 3:30 p.m. The panel will be moderated by Teaching Hard History Advisory Board member Meredith McCoy and will feature the film’s director and editor, Howdice Brown III, and producers Marie Acemah and Alice Qannik Glenn. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting conversation. Register here!
Read more about the film here and watch it now at tolerance.org/forgottenslavery.
