The rising cost of healthcare and drugs puts a heavy strain on American families who are already struggling to make ends meet. No family should have to choose between buying life-saving medication and putting food on their table.

Particularly during a pandemic when our healthcare is more critical than ever, and when working families have been hit hard financially, the need to address the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs is even more urgent.

That’s why, after an 18-month investigation in the Oversight committee, I chaired two back-to-back hearings last week on prescription drug costs. At these hearings, we presented reports to major drug company CEOs that revealed these companies are taking advantage of the federal law that prohibits Medicare from directly negotiating with these companies to lower prices. We must hold Big Pharma accountable for putting people over profit.

House Democrats passed H.R. 3 The Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act, but Trump and Senate Republicans have abandoned the legislation which has been sitting in Mitch McConnell's legislative graveyard since last December.

In the midst of the COVID pandemic, Americans are struggling to pay for critical care and medications that they need. The Senate must act.
