John, DFA members voted to make fighting climate change and passing a Green New Deal our top priority issue, and it’s no wonder why. As I speak, the world is witnessing an uptick in extreme weather and higher temperatures. From the extreme damage Hurricane Dorian brought upon the Bahamas and some of the East Coast to the continued burning of the Amazon rainforest, we are witnessing the beginning of the climate crisis -- and scientists warn if we don’t take bold action within the next 11 years, we’ll reach a point of no return and face the worst possible impacts. Two of the most prolific and important figures who’ve rang the alarm bells and got our attention when it comes to climate are authors Bill McKibben and Naomi Klein, and they both have brand new books on the issue: Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? and On Fire: The Burning Case for a Green New Deal.
Thirty years ago, McKibben offered one of the earliest warnings about climate change in his best-selling book, The End of Nature. Now, in his newest book Falter, he broadens the warning: the entire human race, he suggests, has begun to play out unless we take bold action to save the planet and humanity itself. Five years after her iconic book, This Changes Everything, Klein now warns us in On Fire that climate change has gone from a far-off threat to a burning emergency, and explains how the Green New Deal could avert climate catastrophe and be a blueprint for a just and thriving society.
The only way we’ll stop the rapid warming of our planet and prevent a doomsday scenario is by listening to the experts and electing progressive leaders who are committed to passing policies like the Green New Deal. We have no time to waste. In solidarity, -Yvette Yvette Simpson, CEO ![]() |
