Don't Miss These FIJA Events in October!

Hello John,

I want to quickly invite you to join friends of FIJA for some events we have on the calendar this month!

15 Minutes with FIJA

Today (5 October 2020) and every Monday evening this month, I'll be hosting a weekly, interactive session called 15 Minutes with FIJA at 6:30 pm Mountain time.

This short event will feature a quick 15-minute presentation from FIJA to:

update you on recent jury-related news such as the status of trial by jury during the pandemic, court cases related to jury rights, legislation regarding trial by jury, etc., and

highlight one FIJA project, resource, activity, etc.

I'll start on time (hold me to it!), spend 15 minutes on jury-related news and one FIJA highlight, and then you are good to go or you are welcome to stick around for another 15 minutes for a quick Q&A.

Virtual Reading Groups

Did you know that in the midst of the American Revolution, jurors made extensive use of jury nullification in a series of trials now known as the Philadelphia treason trials? Professor Carlton F.W. Larson has compiled his extensive research into this little-known bit of history in a book entitled The Trials of Allegiance: Treason, Juries, and the American Revolution.

Beginning on 22 October and continuing for the following two Thursdays after that, you are invited to join us for a virtual reading group with Larson's book as our readin selection. Each Thursday evening session will last approximately an hour, we start at 6:30 pm Mountain time, so that should allow East Coast folks to wrap up at a reasonable hour and most West Coast folks to join us after work.

Juror Rights Outreach in Texas

Our supervolunteer Bob Smilie in Texas has two juror rights outreach events lined up. If you are in the area and want to join him, click through to get in touch with him!

Bob is coordinating outreach at:

the Consciousness and Psychedelics Fall Conference ([link removed]), 11 October, at the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and

the Riesel Lions Club Gun + Knife Show ([link removed]), 31 October-1 November, in Riesel, TX
