The Supreme Court’s yearly term begins today.
Because of the Merrick Garland seat the GOP stole in 2016 -- and because of Republican fervor to now steal the late Justice Ginsburg’s seat too, the cases before the court this term may not end well for the American people. So-called “religious liberty protections” (actually legalized discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals) could be expanded, sensitive documents from the Mueller investigation that a lower court has ruled the American people have a right to see could be permanently hidden, and the Affordable Care Act could be struck down forever.
Our saving grace is that House Democrats have been fighting tooth and nail to guard us from the absolute worst of what the high court may do next. Our liberal lawmakers have already passed bills to codify LGBTQ+ protections and protect and expand the Affordable Care Act. They’ve even introduced legislation to place term limits on Supreme Court justices -- acting to shorten the tenures of Trump’s appointees while also moving to weaken the impact of their eventual decisions.
But none of the bills the Democrats have passed have yet become law. That’s because the GOP still rules the Senate, and Donald Trump still rules the White House.
If we flipped the Senate and the Oval Office blue this November, we’d have a shield like no other against anything the conservative courts try to throw at us. But our candidates are in tight races -- including the race at the top of the ticket -- precisely because of how immoral and unpredictable Republicans have proven themselves to be. And we don’t have the funds we need to send them into office: Right now, in fact, we’re $4,827 short.
We are so close, yet so far. We just need the support of the engaged Americans on our side to push past the Republican opposition and ensure a future of equal rights, affordable and accessible health coverage, and true social justice for all. We need you.
