Plenary | Rule of Law | Neighbourhood

This week, MEPs take part in a plenary session featuring debates and votes on the rule of law conditionality in the framework of MFF 2021-2027, the recovery instrument and the approval of the two Commissioner-designates, Valdis Dombrovskis and Mairead McGuinness. On Tuesday, the Commission is expected to present its Enlargement Package. Meanwhile, EU leaders will review bilateral relations with Ukraine during a summit on Tuesday.

European Parliament

In this week’s plenary, MEPs will debate the Rule of Law conditionality in the framework of MFF 2021-2027 and Next Generation EU. Furthermore, MEPs will decide whether to approach the two new Commissioner-designates, giving the green light to Valdis Dombrovskis to take over the trade portfolio and Mairead McGuinness the portfolio of Financial services, financial stability and Capital Markets Union. On Wednesday, Parliament will also hold a vote on the European Climate Law.

European Commission

On Thursday and Friday, HR/VP Josep Borrell and Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, will visit the capital of Ethiopia to handover Covid-19 medical equipment. On Tuesday, the College of Commissioners will meet. On the agenda: The release of the new Roma strategic framework for equality, inclusion and participation, the Communication on an Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans, and the Enlargement Package. This package will analyse the accession process and contain country-specific reports on the progress of the candidates.

European Council

On Tuesday, leaders will convene in Brussel to review the EU’s bilateral relations with Ukraine. Items for on the agenda are, amongst other things: the socio-economic impact of the pandemic and EU support to Ukraine, the next steps in the implementation of the Association Agreement, including its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. Moreover, leaders will discuss the conflict in eastern Ukraine and recent developments in Belarus.
