Dear friend,
Yesterday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and lawmakers announced the introduction of the Reproductive Freedom Act (RFA), proactive legislation that would protect and expand access to reproductive health care in New Jersey, including abortion, birth control, and pregnancy-related care.
This groundbreaking bill is a testament to the work of local advocates. NIRH's partner, the Thrive NJ coalition, worked closely with bill sponsors to ensure the RFA addresses critical reproductive health care access issues. As a result of this advocacy, the RFA ensures that New Jerseyans have the right to make decisions about their reproductive health care. It also expands access by removing obstacles people may face when accessing care, such as harmful, medically unnecessary restrictions and onerous financial barriers.
Expanding access to care is especially important for vulnerable communities who face exacerbated hurdles to accessing care. The RFA would expand financial coverage for undocumented people seeking care, including abortion, contraception, and other pregnancy-related services. This would help to ensure that all New Jerseyans, regardless of immigration status, would have access to high quality reproductive health care.
In the face of a global pandemic and an alarming Supreme Court nomination, the threat to our rights and ability to access health care is more urgent than ever before. Everyone should be able to receive the care they need and plan their families without barriers, fears, or interference from others, and NIRH is proud to be part of the Thrive NJ coalition as they work to make that vision a reality. Stay connected to this exciting work here. [link removed]
Happy Friday,
Andrea Miller
President, NIRH
