Facebook policy chief Joel Kaplan has been using the vast social network to boost sites that pump out pro-Trump lies and climate denial, even stepping in to make the Daily Caller -- a cesspool of racism and misogyny -- an official fact-checker.

Kaplan’s influence is huge, but outside Facebook he’s anonymous -- so he’s skating by even as Facebook is under fire.

Kaplan -- a former Bush aide and coal lobbyist -- has been quietly calling key shots at Facebook for years. When Zuckerberg considered taking down a Trump video about banning Muslims in 2015, Kaplan persuaded him to change Facebook’s own rules instead. 

And when Facebook was revamping its newsfeed algorithm, Kaplan's team stepped in to protect Fox News’ and Breitbart’s rankings.

Insiders say this is about appeasing Republican accusations of pro-liberal bias. But by pandering to their paranoia, Facebook has allowed lies and hate to flood the platform.
