WEEK IN REVIEW

Dear Friend –

From fighting for Iowa’s small businesses – to carrying out my duties on the Senate Judiciary Committee – this week, I’ve been continuing my work in the United States Senate bringing the voices of Iowans to Washington.

An essential part of my job in the Senate is assisting Iowans with casework issues – and it continues to be one of my top priorities. My office is helping folks in every county and corner of our state as part of our Traveling Office Hours, which will be held through October 9th.

Any time you are in need of assistance working with a federal agency, or to get your questions answered, I encourage you to reach out to my office. We are here to help.

Here are some of the highlights from what I’ve been working on this week:

Meeting Judge Amy Coney Barrett

Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a well-respected jurist, an accomplished legal scholar, and a mother to seven beautiful children. I am truly grateful for her example for all of us working moms, but especially for young women across this country. She has proven a mom really can do anything.

This week, Judge Barrett and I had a conversation around her judicial record and commitment to the Constitution. She deserves a fair and honest confirmation process, and as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I am committed to evaluating Judge Barrett on the basis of her qualifications and character.

Continuing to Fight for Small Businesses

Between the derecho and flooding, natural disasters have caused significant challenges and economic harm to Iowa’s small businesses in recent years.

That’s why I helped introduce the bipartisan PREPARE Act that will help our small business owners access resources to protect their property from potential disasters and help them avoid unforeseen expenses in the future.

To help ensure our small businesses are provided with the relief they need during COVID-19, I’m also calling on Republican and Democratic Congressional leaders to allow small businesses a second pass at the Paycheck Protection Program – a successful lifeline that I helped champion as a member of the Senate Small Business Committee.

Pressing the Department of Defense for Answers

As a combat veteran, and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, I’m pressing the Department of Defense (DOD) for answers regarding sexual harassment allegations against a senior civilian who served as an Executive Director within the department.

Sexual harassment is unacceptable at any level but exceptionally inappropriate from senior leaders. That’s why I’m requiring DOD to identify the actions they took to stop this harassment, explain how this went on for so long, and ensure accountability and consequences for senior leaders who harass their employees.
