I wanted to send you this reminder in case you missed my email (below) about stopping pharmaceutical corporations from profiteering from the coronavirus pandemic.
With more and more local lockdowns springing up across the country and a predicted second wave on the horizon, it’s clear we urgently need a vaccine. But this is a global crisis and so we need a global solution.
Pharmaceutical companies are set to stand in the way of tackling Covid-19. Many are looking to profiteer and charge high prices for any vaccine they develop, which would make it too expensive for many low-income countries to access. This is despite huge amounts of public funding for vaccines.
It’s vital that we expose and stop large pharmaceutical companies profiteering from this crisis. If you missed my previous email, and are able to make a donation of £3 today, please consider helping our campaign go further.

I’m sure that as a supporter of Global Justice Now and someone who cares about the world we live in, you’ve been helping to tackle Covid-19. It might be wearing a mask or shopping for someone else, we are taking steps together in this uncertain time.
Big pharmaceutical companies are also saying that they will be doing their part by making a Covid-19 vaccine affordable. But we know that this is just a front. These corporations make big profits from medicines by charging high prices, and this is showing little sign of stopping now.
If we’re going to defeat Covid-19, it’s essential that all countries around the world can afford a vaccine. Can you donate £3 today to help us fight for an affordable vaccine?

A donation from you could really make a difference
In these uncertain times I can imagine you might be thinking carefully about donating, so I’d like you to know about the difference a donation from you can make.
People like you make up over two thirds of our funding, which means our campaigning work is only possible thanks to this important support. It gives us the independence to be as outspoken as it takes to make change. If you feel you can help us fight for an affordable vaccine and expose profiteering big business, please donate today, even a small amount makes a difference.

Pharmaceutical corporations will be cashing in on the crisis
Just recently, the pharmaceutical company Moderna dropped the pretence of helping in this crisis. Moderna says it plans to make a profit from its potential Covid-19 vaccine, refusing to price the vaccine at the equivalent of how much it costs to make.
It’s set to cost the highest price for any vaccine yet which would make it unaffordable for many countries in the global south. From the deals it’s already struck with the US government, Moderna stands to earn up to a whopping $8.1 billion. This is despite $1 billion of US public funds going towards developing Moderna’s vaccine – these public funds should be used for public good, not corporate profits.
Companies like Moderna, including those in the UK, make eye watering profits because they can put patents on medicines. This means no other company can make them, and they can charge whatever price they like – this can’t continue, especially during this crisis.

How you can help take the fight forward
Thousands of people like you have taken action to write to the pharmaceutical company Moderna and demand it commit to a non-profit price for its Covid-19 vaccine and share it with the world. Now more than ever we need to be standing up to these big businesses.
Moderna isn’t just one bad egg, by donating today you can help us keep up the pressure on other companies and fight for changes to the pharmaceutical industry. With your backing we can keep campaigning for a People’s Vaccine – affordable to all countries and free to the public. A donation from you can help us push forward our campaign by getting media coverage, raising awareness, mobilising more of the public to take action and co-ordinating with our allies.
Best wishes
