Issue No. 26
LULAC.org [ [link removed] ]

Hello John,

Welcome back! We share some of the work our councils have done on the ground for
the 2020 Census. Consider chipping during Hispanic Heritage Month to support
Latinos through our national programs and initiatives. Also, if you are the owner
of a small business in California, Texas or New York, apply for the PowerUp Fund
-- a financial grant and intensive mentoring program.

Here’s what else you will find in this issue:

* FTIP Community Outreach Events are coming up on October 7 & 8.

* Join us October 13 for a live discussion on higher education equity.

Here is what you should know.

LULAC 2020 Census Work

See how LULAC mobilized on the ground!

All across the county, LULAC members and community leaders are encouraging others
to fill out the census survey. See below for a few pictures taken of their local
efforts. Congratulations!

At LULAC, we understand the importance of getting counted and how it can bring
federal funding to our communities. That is why we empowered many of our councils
in target areas with Census Mini-Grants. These $500 grants ensured that our
members met people where they were and encouraged as many others to complete the
census before the deadline.

In addition, LULAC had partnered with other latino organizations to establish a
census social media campaign in target areas and with the support of Facebook
through ad credits.

"How can I chip in?" [ [link removed] ]

This month, we continue to share the stories of our members and program
participants [ [link removed] ] as we honor the strengths and
inspirations of our unique culture and heritage. Our ask of you is simple. Please
help support your communities by chipping in to our national programs and
services. Our goal is to achieve $20,000 in donations so we can reach a generous
match from Walmart. Will you celebrate with us? Learn more at

Latina/o Equity in U.S. Higher Education: A National Campaign for Equity
Assessment Policy

Join us! [ [link removed] ] | Tuesday, October 13 from 1-2:30PM
CST

The Hispanic Equity Report at UT Austin reports that Latino employees and
students experience vast inequalities in student enrollments, disparities in
employee compensation, lack of diversity in leadership positions, and other
discriminatory practices. It’s time we talk about equity in higher education.
Register at LULAC.org/higheredequity [ [link removed] ] to join
us!

This webinar will spark a discussion to formulate a strategy that addresses
Latina/o Equity in higher education in partnership with LULAC, the Texas Center
for Education Policy (TCEP) at The University of Texas at Austin, and local
organizations, including the National Latina/o Education Research and Policy
Project (NLERAPP). The Independent Equity Committee at the University of Texas at
Austin has proposed extending the Latina/o equity initiative to other colleges
and universities in Texas and California. Our aim is to build a national campaign
together and develop a plan of action for equity assessment policies that support
underrepresented employees and students in higher education.

Coca-Cola to make Election Day a company holiday. [ [link removed] ]

On June 30, Coca-cola announced to employees that they will make Election Day
(Tuesday, November 3, 2020) an additional paid company holiday for all US-based
employees.

Also, Coca-cola has joined the Time to Vote Initiative [ [link removed] ] ,
a national non-partisan coalition of U.S. companies committed to ensuring that
their employees have full access to the voting process this and every Election
Day. We support the Time to Vote movement’s goal to increase participation in our
country’s elections, and we are committed to doing our part as best we can.

Walmart aims to empower voters [ [link removed] ]

Election Day is fast approaching and voters are looking for help in navigating
rules and procedures in place for voting this year. That’s why Walmart and Sam’s
Clubs are taking important steps [ [link removed] ] to
help ensure voters have access to the tools and information that they need to
safely cast their ballots during this election season.

As part of this campaign, Walmart is engaging its customers and associates to
help them check their voter registration status, register to vote, learn more
about the candidates and issues on the ballot in their communities and be
informed about their voting options.
