** Border Angels Update
------------------------------------------------------------

** Angels of the Week
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank You Nicholas and Sid!

We are proud to have young supporters and volunteers that are committed to making the world, and their community, a better place.

** Water Drop
------------------------------------------------------------

We covered a lot of ground this past weekend. We visited three areas over two days. We climbed dry waterfalls, did some bouldering, and had to go through some tunnels. That extra work was needed this weekend to get the supplies to where they are needed the most.

While out this weekend, we removed over 70 lbs of waste from the desert! It's always interesting seeing the different items we come across. At times we find artifacts from previous indigenous peoples that lived or traveled through that area. Every time we are out in the desert, we take the time to acknowledge and thank the indigenous land we are on.

The temperatures are still expected to reach up to 115° in some areas, and we are still only inviting seasoned volunteers with us. We are patiently waiting to be able to take new volunteers with us, and we cannot wait to engage with new volunteers.

Questions? Email Water Drop Program Co-Director James Cordero, [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support!

** Shelter Aid
------------------------------------------------------------

Our friends at Movimiento Juventud shelter were able to get a much needed new fridge and it was all thanks to YOU!

This Tijuana shelter houses many women and children, and we are grateful to be able to provide them with a working fridge to make the most use of their groceries and produce.

We support 15 other shelters, many of which no longer get funds or donations from anywhere else since COVID. Your support and donations matter to them.

Want to contribute to our migrant families in Tijuana? Click on the Donate button below!

Our migrant families and shelter directors extend a warm thank you for giving them with another lovely family dinner.

We cannot thank you enough for your support – you’re not only providing a roof over their heads, but you are saving lives! These children and adults rely solely on the support you provide during the pandemic.

** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program
------------------------------------------------------------
It was not without difficulty but we have freed yet another person from detention through our Families Reunidas Bond Program, Kuo. He is a 22 year old Chinese asylum seeker who was in detention for an alarming 11 months. He was detained in the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which continues to have an extreme number of COVID cases, and we are so glad to have one less person exposed.

We cannot stress enough the urgency of bonding people out of detention centers, as we have now seen 21 confirmed deaths in ICE custody, and the conditions in detention centers across the US continue to be negligent and horrifying. Kuo is now headed to New York to start a new life with his sponsor. We could not have achieved his freedom without the help of Freedom For Immigrants and without all of your donations.

We need YOUR help to save lives! Our bond funds are running low and we need your support more than ever in order to free our folks. All donations make a difference no matter the amount, and every dollar is spent towards getting someone out of detention! • Link down below to donate to our bond program🦋

** BA Presentations
------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you so much to John Paul Ramirez and Loyola Marymount University’s Campus Ministry for hosting us virtually today! We had an engaging and timely conversation about border life and how it is impacted by federal immigration policies.

We are dedicated to promoting a culture of love. Spending time speaking with youth about what it means to lead with kindness reminds us of our mission.

Continue working towards building a more inclusive future.

To invite us to present to your group, email us at [email protected]

** San Diego Female Attorneys Share Impact of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
------------------------------------------------------------
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a towering women’s rights champion who became the court’s second female justice, died Friday at 87 years old

By Melissa Adan

" Across San Diego County many are honoring the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87, ([link removed][UNIQID]) who spent more than a quarter-century on the nation's highest court fighting for equality.

Justice Ginsburg's landmark cases impacted Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney, both personally and professionally.

"That she would see me as a person even though I am undocumented, that she saw me as an equal member of our society even though I am a woman, and just as short as she is," Garcia said with a smile, describing how Ginsburg's life's work has lifted her. "We can walk seven feet tall because she has paved the way for us."

Garcia said she had the honor to witness Justice Ginsburg in action when she attended Supreme Court oral arguments on the DACA case last fall. ([link removed][UNIQID]) "

** Call to Action
------------------------------------------------------------
Are you angry?
Angry that there’s kids in cages?
Angry about the 20th death confirmed in ICE custody?
Angry about ICE forcibly sterilizing women?
Angry that DACA recipients may be deported?
Angry at so many black lives lost?
Angry about so many things this year it seems like you’ve lost count?

We are too.

We ask you to REGISTER TO VOTE. Take your anger and put it to good use. Use your voice and vote those out of office that do not reflect your morals and ethics. Choose representation that does not support the current unjust and racist policies and systems. We must do everything in our power to effect meaningful change, and do our part for those who cannot. We cannot allow this injustice and neglect to continue, we cannot allow any more lives lost.

** Green Cards for Kids
------------------------------------------------------------

With our new Green Cards for Kids program, we are so lucky to be able to work with immigration attorney Fabiola Navarro who will be representing these children.

It is crucial that we help these children as they have already suffered enough abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

With your continued support, we can help pay for the legal representation these children deserve in this critical time of their lives.

2. Familias Reunidas Bond Program👨‍👩‍👧: Given the severity of this outbreak, we NEED to get as many people out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center as we can. With your help we can post bond for more individuals! (Link in highlights under Bond Program)

3. Water Drop Program
💧
: Even after having to postpone public water drops, our team is still constantly in the desert scouting and dropping the supplies necessary for survival. Their work never stops because the need never stops.

CBP Wants to Destroy Records of Misconduct. We Can’t Let Them.

An agency plagued with chronic misconduct and impunity should not be allowed to purge files.

By Shaw Drake

"Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the nation’s largest federal law enforcement agency, operates with ** routine impunity ([link removed][UNIQID])
. Now, the agency has asked the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which maintains federal agency records, to approve destruction of internal CBP records of misconduct.

An agency rife with abuse should not be allowed to purge its own paper trail of wrongdoing. That’s why this week, the ACLU of Texas Border Rights Center, along with more than 100 partner organizations, filed a public comment urging NARA to reject CBP’s proposal. The principal reason: CBP’s own oversight system is a disaster, and future study of the agency’s failures of accountability will be stymied by the documents’ destruction. "

Family, advocates mourn San Diego federal inmate who died of COVID-19

Inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center San Diego and mourners across the street communicated Monday night through lights, candles, music and the banging of windows

By Alex Riggins

"DOWNTOWN — A few dozen people gathered Monday night outside the federal jail in downtown San Diego to hold a vigil for an inmate who died of COVID-19, and to show support for inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus.

Inmates inside the building responded by pounding on windows, waving hand-held lights and flicking their lights off and on, while those outside the building had set out hundreds of candles they said represented each inmate."

‘We sent 500 tests. They don’t answer calls’: Inside ICE’s coronavirus testing disaster

Internal emails show ICE rebuffed New Mexico public health officials offering to help contain COVID-19.

By Patrick Michaels and Laura C. Morel

" Internal emails obtained by Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting provide a behind-the-scenes look at the frustration that built up over months within the New Mexico Department of Health as officials with ICE or its contractors failed to test detainees exposed to the virus – or turned down vital testing assistance. State officials sought to control the spread of the virus at detention centers – including county jails and ICE facilities – worried that a COVID-19 outbreak in a correctional setting could spread into the community."
