Dear AFGE Warriors,
I hope you are having a reflective and powerful National Hispanic Heritage Month!
To highlight our own Hispanic leaders and the great work they are doing, the Women’s and Fair Practices Departments are hosting a Hispanic Leaders Panel on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. ET. This panel will be held via Zoom and will also be live streamed via AFGE's Facebook page. To register for this event please click here.
We hope you’re able to join us on Tuesday, October 6 to hear from some of our great Hispanic leaders. Our nation and the labor movement are only as strong as our diversity.
As you know, September 15 – October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, a month that honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. To celebrate and reflect this month, we are proudly highlighting another Hispanic labor leader, Linda Chavez-Thompson.
Mexican-American Linda Chavez-Thompson is a powerhouse in the labor movement, who served as the first Latina Vice President on The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) from 1995 until 2007. She has worked in numerous organizations as a labor leader, including the National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Her work has helped improve the quality of labor unions, and she continues to raise the bar, as she was once the highest-ranking women in the labor movement.
We are thankful to our Hispanic union siblings for their contributions to the labor community, our nation and our world.
In Solidarity,
Jeremy A. Lannan
NVP for Women and Fair Practices
