Parliamentary Diary

Dear Friend,

I hope you're well.

This has been a pretty sombre first week of local lockdown measures in force in Cardiff with many feeling like we've taken two steps backwards in our battle against this virus. These are difficult times, but thank you for doing your part to help stop the spread of the virus and to keep people safe.

I've had many constituents get in touch concerned about the impact of another lockdown on loneliness and isolation. I'm really pleased that our Welsh Labour Government has today confirmed that single adult households can now form a 'bubble' with another household in their county to help combat loneliness.

I've been meeting with Welsh Government who tell me that they're already seeing positive changes as a result of the lockdown measures in RCT and Caerphilly, showing that these measures are effective. So let's stick together, follow the rules and drive these cases down in our area!

Here's a snapshot of what's been happening over the last couple of weeks.

Continue to stay safe and as ever, if you would like to get in touch with me please contact [email protected]. (mailto:[email protected])

With very best wishes,
Rhiwbina Lloyds Pharmacy Saved!

[link removed]

Absolutely fantastic news that Lloyds Pharmacy in Rhiwbina will now remain open and will continue to serve the local community. Julie and I wrote to the CEO of Lloyds Pharmacy expressing deep concern of the impact the closure would have, particularly in this health crisis and as we move into the winter months.

Thank you to all who campaigned and petitioned with us to ensure this vital service was saved.
Cardiff North Surveys Results
Over the Summer I wanted to hear from you in Cardiff North on the issues that most concern you, to ensure they shape my priorities as your MP.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The results are now in and here's a snapshot of what you told me matters to you most.
Respondents were able to choose multiple issues that concern them most. Cardiff North constituents told me their top 4 local concerns are:
1. Environment and climate action – 67%
2. Health and health services – 63%
3. Local impact of Brexit post-Covid – 42%
4. Protecting jobs, businesses and high streets – 36%

17.37% of respondents chose ‘other’ and cited they were particularly concerned about the loss of green space with the Velindre development, crime and safety, infrastructure and development and adequate health services.

When I asked Cardiff North constituents what they’d like me to raise in Parliament on their behalf, they told me:
1. Climate change and the environment – 60.21%
2. Brexit and trade deals – 42.67%
3. The economy and post-Covid recovery – 40.58%
4. Protecting jobs, businesses and industry – 26.18%

When asked in the context of this current health crisis what the single most important issue to them was, Cardiff North told me that climate change and the environment was most important.

I'll publish the full results in due course.
Labour Demands Action to Save People & Planet
Labour List Article ([link removed])
Yemen is on the brink of an environmental catastrophe as the threat of an abandoned oil tanker risks spilling 157,000 tonnes of crude oil into the Red Sea.

People and planet must be protected. Wayne David MP and I wrote to the Minister calling for the UK Government to show global leadership as penholders on Yemen on the UN Security Council, as an oil spillage of any magnitude would deepen the world’s gravest humanitarian emergency in a country already crippled by conflict, COVID-19 and famine.
Join our Cardiff North Eco Team!

Cardiff North constituents have told me that the climate emergency is one of their top priorities. At an open discussion I held earlier this year, the excellent idea of establishing a Cardiff North Eco Team was raised. I’d love to help bring that to a reality and I’d really like your help and ideas!

The purpose of the Eco team is to help drive climate ambition and sustainability locally and do our part within our community to help tackle the climate emergency. Individual awareness and action is critical in our fight against runaway climate change. Empowering our communities by sharing knowledge, innovative ideas and working together to drive positive change and live more sustainability is key.

I’m holding an initial zoom meeting as I’d love to hear from you and your ideas on how we can make that happen and what we’d like the Eco Team to look like. Please come along, even if you’d just like to listen in and don’t want to take part in the discussion.

Date: Thursday 22nd October

Time: 7pm

This meeting will be held via Zoom- please get in touch by email if you'd like to be involved and we'll send you the invite link.
Calls for Holiday Refunds

I was pleased to sign this letter to the Business Secretary calling for travel companies to ensure families aren’t left out of pocket.

Much of Wales are now in lockdown measures. Cardiff North constituents should receive refunds or credit notices for holidays they’re now unable to take.
Casework Catch Up
Car Chaos!
A constituent sold his car but there was an issue with the transfer of ownership which meant that that he was receiving parking charges that were being issued to the new driver.

I contacted the DVLA on my constituent's behalf to confirm the transfer of ownership and have the parking charges rescinded.

Home Office Hell!

My constituent had submitted an application for a visa for his wife and had not heard back for a significant period of time due to delays with Covid-19. We were able to contact the Home Office and chase a decision on the application. The visa has now been issued and my constituent has been reunited with his wife.

Whitchurch Flooding Update

Julie Morgan MS and I have been working with local residents and National Resources Wales in response to the flooding in Whitchurch back in February. We recently met virtually with NRW and residents were able to feed in some of their questions in advance. We are meeting NRW again next week and you can find the minutes of the previous meeting on my website. ([link removed])

Whilst the pandemic has prevented us from having the public meeting with NRW that Julie and I committed to arranging, I am pleased NRW have renewed their commitment to meeting with residents once it is safe to do so. We will provide another update in due course.
Shop Local, Shop Safe!

Now more than ever our local businesses and high streets need our support. This impact of the pandemic has been incredibly damaging for businesses and it's important that we support them by shopping local and shopping safely.

Black History Month
This week marked the start of Black History Month in Wales which acknowledges the value and contributions made by BAME communities to local, national and world history. In what would usually be a celebratory month long programme in October, Race Council Cymru ([link removed]) are turning Black History Month Wales ([link removed]) into Black History Wales - a full year of celebratory activities.

As our First Minister proudly said, Black History is Welsh History and I, alongside Welsh Labour are very proud to celebrate and support this.

Cardiff & Vale Health Board Update
I have been meeting regularly with the Chief Executive of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board for updates on the health crisis. An incredibly difficult situation is being depicted - an understandably tired workforce and the prospect of a second wave as we head towards winter.

However, the Health Board tell me that they're prepared for an increase sooner and are going into the winter months with far more knowledge of the disease than the first time around, with more treatments as a result of research.

Please continue to stay safe and follow the local lockdown rules in place to help keep people safe and support our hard-working NHS.
Save Flaxland Woods
Julie Morgan MS and I have been supporting a group of enthusiastic locals who've come together to form "Friends of Flaxland Woods" which is under threat of being sold for development.

The group are holding an AGM next Monday 5th October at 8pm on Zoom. Please email [email protected] or message their Facebook Page if you'd like to join the meeting.
National Police Memorial Day

Last week marked National Police Memorial Day. As the country mourned the loss of Sgt Matiu Ratana it is important to remember never to take our police for granted. To thank all those working hard to protect our communities and risking their lives to keep us safe. The sacrifice made by those we’ve lost must never be forgotten.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Yesterday marked the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is an important reminder of the signs of breast cancer and that it is SAFE to report them to your GP. The earlier the diagnosis, the better chances of success.

Single-Adult Household Bubbles

Today the First Minister announced that single-adult households were able to form a bubble with another household in the county in a bid to alleviate the isolation and loneliness that has blighted many throughout the pandemic. You can read the news update here: ([link removed])
