Asked to Denounce White Supremacists, President Trump Tells Far-Right Extremist Group to "Stand By"
President Trump name-checked the Proud Boys during Tuesday night’s presidential debate, telling them to “stand by,” and members of the right-wing extremist group could barely contain their excitement. Debate moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump, “Are you willing tonight to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence?”
“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,” Trump responded.
In the weeks leading up to the 2020 presidential election, the ADL Center on Extremism in conjunction with ADL’s Center for Technology and Society is releasing a series of news briefs on topics of concern regarding the role extremists and extremism more broadly are playing in our current political environment.
