Hi John— I just wanted to make sure you saw this email. If you can,

John, we have a problem.
Right now there are no less than five (5!) bills in Congress that, if they passed, would essentially end the Internet as we know it.
I know that sounds like an exaggeration. Unfortunately, it’s not. I’ll list the bills below in a minute with a link to more information about each of them in case you want to read more.
But here’s the thing: just as we approach the end of this Congressional session—right when lawmakers will be making last ditch attempts to ram through votes on bills like the EARN IT Act—we are running dangerously low on the type of funds that we can use to directly fight against bad Internet legislation like this.
Please click here to rush an urgent donation to our legislative Internet Defense fund so we can stop these Internet censorship and surveillance bills from becoming law.

Here are the bills we’re currently fighting:
-
The EARN IT act (bill information), perhaps the most disingenuous piece of Internet legislation since SOPA/PIPA, threatens end-to-end encryption and online free expression while failing to keep children safe;
-
Reauthorization of some of the worst sections of the PATRIOT ACT and FISA Amendments Act (bill information), the foundation of the government’s unconstitutional and ineffective mass surveillance programs;
-
Blackburn, Graham, and Wicker bill to blow up Section 230 (bill information), just the latest in a series of terrible bills from both Democrats and Republicans that would mess with Communications Decency Act, opening the floodgates for mass Internet censorship;
-
The Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act (bill information), a full-frontal assault on encryption technology which would put lives in danger and force companies to grant the government access to our private communications;
-
The PACT Act (bill information) is another threat to Section 230. While its goal is to address moderation of users by platforms, if passed it would legally require online censorship, likely harming smaller platforms by burdening them with legal fees that they can’t afford.

But we’re not just fighting back against bad legislation. We’re also working hard to get good bills passed at the local, state, and Federal level to protect our basic rights in the digital age:
-
The Facial Recognition and Biometric Moratorium Act of 2020 (bill text), is landmark Federal legislation to effectively ban all law enforcement and government use of facial recognition surveillance in the US;
-
The Save the Internet Act (bill text), which would restore the FCC’s net neutrality protections that were repealed by Ajit Pai;
-
National Biometric Information Privacy Act (bill text), which would stop companies from collecting your biometric information or scanning your face without your knowledge and consent.
-
The Heroes Act (bill text), a COVID-19 relief bill that includes crucial funding needed to make sure everyone, especially students, can get online during the pandemic.
-
The Banning Microtargeted Political Ads Act (bill text), does exactly what it says in the name! It would ban the use of invasive and political advertising that uses data harvesting to manipulate us and undermine democracy.

I have to be honest, those lists aren’t even complete! We are facing unprecedented threats to our digital rights, and we can’t afford to let up now. That’s why we’re asking everyone on our list to please stretch as much as you can to make a donation before this Congressional session ends. We’ll use every cent to fight for your rights.
Thanks for all you do,
