Supreme Court Nomination, Pro-life Action

Two weeks ago today, news broke that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away. She was a pioneer on the court, and her 27 years of service to this country on our highest bench will be remembered for generations. Justice Ginsburg's passing now means that the Supreme Court has a vacant seat, and President Trump has nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill it.

As outlined in the Constitution, the process of nominating and confirming a Supreme Court Justice falls into the hands of the President and the Senate. As a member of the House of Representatives, I am not granted a vote on matters of judicial appointments. However, the importance of this process cannot be underscored enough, so I'd like to give you a quick glimpse at what will happen in the coming weeks.

Now that President Trump has officially sent his nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Senate, the matter falls into their hands. What will happen first is a hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee. This will most likely take place over the course of multiple days and potentially even weeks. Each Senator on this committee will ask Judge Barrett a variety of questions, and then the Committee will vote on whether or not she should proceed to the full Senate for a vote on final confirmation. Once this happens, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will determine the date and time for a full Senate vote, and then the vote will take place.

While this process is rather simple in terms of its Constitutional requirements, it will undoubtedly become hostile and ugly. I fully anticipate Senate Democrats will attack Judge Barrett's character, religion, past accomplishments, and vehemently question her stances on controversial issues. It has also become clear that Senate Democrats will attempt to block her nomination by any means possible, which is both unfortunate and unsurprising.

While character assassinations have already begun on Judge Barrett, it is important to understand she is extremely qualified for the Supreme Court. She was top of her class at Notre Dame Law School, she clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, she was a professor of law at her alma matter and is a sitting U.S. Circuit Court Judge. To add to her incredible resume, Judge Barrett is also a mother of seven children, two of whom are adopted children from Haiti, and a devout Catholic. Her Pro-Life stance is yet another positive mark on her credentials, as she is a strong defender of life and understands that being Pro-Life right now is more important than ever before. I believe she is a great nominee to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat, and I applaud President Trump for selecting such an excellent candidate.​​​​​​​

Protecting Babies

As the nomination of Judge Barrett has dominated the news cycle for the past two weeks, another piece of great news from the White House has been overshadowed. President Trump has signed an Executive Order on Protecting Vulnerable Newborn and Infant Children. This incredible action will give premature and born-alive babies the care, love, and protection that they deserve. I fully support this Executive Order, and I am grateful that President Trump has taken on this fight head on - but I know that this fight is not over, and I will always champion the Pro-Life cause.​​​​​​​
