In San Salvador’s bustling Historic Center, nothing gets done without approval from the murderous street gangs. This week, a new InSight Crime investigation reveals how El Salvador’s MS13 and Barrio 18 have used this stranglehold to control territory and extort vendors while building alliances with politicians of all parties, including officials in the halls of Nayib Bukele's presidential palace.
We also present an exclusive chapter ([link removed]) from “MS-13: The Making of America's Most Notorious Gang,” the new book ([link removed]) from InSight Crime Co-director Steven Dudley that chronicles the ruthless gang’s history, spread and social dynamics through its own members

The notorious Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) and Barrio 18 street gangs have steadily tightened their grip on almost all aspects of life in the heart of El Salvador’s informal urban markets – a gold mine for extortion, contraband, drug-peddling, and more.
This two-year InSight Crime investigation chronicles how the gangs, with their ever-increasing control of territory and criminal revenue, have used their stranglehold on the Historic Center to expand their power in El Salvador.

** Virtual Retreat 2020
------------------------------------------------------------
Like so many, InSight Crime has been impacted in ways unforeseen by the coronavirus. But the organization continues to weather the difficult times, speaking to primary sources who form the backbone of our coverage and exposing organized crime around the Americas.
As the year ends, we would normally hold our annual retreat, in which our tightknit team gathers in Colombia. The retreat offers workshops to hone writing skills and training for high-risk environments. But it also provides much laughter and bonding, especially during teambuilding exercises that require some quick thinking.
Unable to convene this year, the staff of about 50 investigators working across the Americas and Europe gathered virtually. As usual, we celebrated colleagues, laughed and ate together, in our own squares. But it was also a time to reflect on what the organization had overcome, with Co-director Jeremy McDermott carving a game plan for the upcoming year, including a plan to gather in person once again when conditions permit.
