Like so many, InSight Crime has been impacted in ways unforeseen by the coronavirus. But the organization continues to weather the difficult times, speaking to primary sources who form the backbone of our coverage and exposing organized crime around the Americas.

As the year ends, we would normally hold our annual retreat, in which our tightknit team gathers in Colombia. The retreat offers workshops to hone writing skills and training for high-risk environments. But it also provides much laughter and bonding, especially during teambuilding exercises that require some quick thinking.

Unable to convene this year, the staff of about 50 investigators working across the Americas and Europe gathered virtually. As usual, we celebrated colleagues, laughed and ate together, in our own squares. But it was also a time to reflect on what the organization had overcome, with Co-director Jeremy McDermott carving a game plan for the upcoming year, including a plan to gather in person once again when conditions permit.
