Dear Friend –
Over the August recess, House and Senate staffers negotiated the bulk of what will be the FY20 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). However, key decisions were postponed including a desperately needed yearlong ban on US arms sales for the war in Yemen.
As Members of Congress now return to Washington to negotiate the final pieces of the NDAA, it is critical that the Speaker of the House, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, stands firm and ensures that the ban on arms sales for the war in Yemen, known as 1099X, remains in the NDAA.
Call Speaker Pelosi, regardless of what state you live in, and tell her that this year’s NDAA MUST include 1099X: the one-year ban on the sale and transfer of bombs to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
US-made bombs are fueling the horrific war, and the people of Yemen need our commitment to stop providing support for this war. Instead we must use our diplomacy to push all parties towards peace negotiations.
You have already done so much to advocate for peace in Yemen, but now is the time to put pressure on Speaker Pelosi to keep the ban on arms sales in the final version of the NDAA.
Congress – both the House and Senate – has tried to end our involvement in the war by passing the Yemen War Powers Resolutions earlier this year, but the President vetoed it – twice! Through the NDAA, a virtually veto-proof bill, we now have the opportunity to stop the flow of arms to the Saudi-UAE coalition, forcing all sides to come to the negotiation table. The House has already done their part in passing the ban and now we need Speaker Pelosi to ensure the ban remains in the final version of the NDAA.
The people of Yemen continue to live through the world's worst humanitarian crisis right now – and they're counting on you to do something to stop it.
Thank you for standing up for peace and for the people of Yemen.
Onwards,
