Download the Toolkit Red Ribbon Week is October 23–31 Enrique “Kiki” Camarena joined the Drug Enforcement Administration in 1974. Later, in 1981, he was stationed in Mexico, where he spent years gathering information about that country’s largest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. In 1985, he was close to exposing a multi-billion-dollar drug pipeline. Before he could do that, however, he was kidnapped on February 7, 1985, while on the way to have lunch with his wife. Five men grabbed him, threw him in a car, and drove away. His body was discovered on March 5, 1985. After his death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Henry Lozano, a high school friend of Kiki’s, launched Camarena Clubs in Kiki’s hometown of Calexico, California. Members of the Camarena Club wore red ribbons and pledged to live drug-free lives to honor Kiki’s and others’ sacrifices. Red Ribbon Week caught on and was formalized in 1988 by the National Family Partnership. Now, more than 80 million young people and adults wear red ribbons to show their commitment to living health, drug-free lifestyles. Please join us in sharing information about this positive event by taking advantage of the DEA's Red Ribbon Week toolkit.
