The saga of Nancy Pelosi’s totally out-of-line lashing out at our squad continues. In a closed door meeting yesterday, Pelosi singled out the squad and their staffers, telling them to stop “publicly attacking other members” and not to “tweet about it.”
First off, that’s an odd demand given Nancy Pelosi herself just did an interview with the New York Times last week where she specifically attacked, demeaned, and disrespected Ayanna, Alexandria, Rashida, and Ilhan.
Secondly, we cannot believe that Pelosi doesn’t realize how bad of a precedent this is. She’s singling out four new leaders who are progressive women of color, and are already under constant attack by Fox News, racists, and conservatives at large.
Just days ago, Tucker Carlson went on a racist rant attacking Ilhan Omar and immigrants — but instead of uniting against detention camps or comments that objectively stoke the flames of racial animus and potentially even violence, Pelosi is obsessing about tweets.
But honestly, the most infuriating part about this stems from who’s getting the blame for rocking the boat. Conservative Democrats who are members of the “problem solvers caucus” blew up Pelosi’s own border bill, and threatened to revolt if we didn’t hand over ICE and border patrol a $4.6 billion blank check.
Understandably, the squad wasn’t too happy about that. Especially when officers of those departments are saying things like this:
“You know that this is a country of Americans, that the president is Donald Trump, that we can take your daughter, and we can put you in jail."
Does that sound like a person you want to hand a few billion dollars with no strings attached? Or does it sound like a department where you want to be very, very sure they’re legally mandated to spend money in humane ways?
Here’s our fundamental problem: there are 235 Democrats in the House, and 200 Republicans. That means that it only takes 18 Democrats to kill a bill, and get their way.
There are 18+ conservative Dems who are willing to use that leverage — but we do not have 18 progressives willing to do the same. But if we buckle down, organize like hell, and fight for progressive Justice Democrats across the country, maybe we will in 2020.
In solidarity
