Dear John,

This week, despite growing public dissent the Coronavirus Act was renewed and remains on the statue books for another six months.

Late in the day, the Government struck a deal with MPs who were planning to scrap the Act.

They promise to consult Parliament over major lockdown regulations in future. While this is welcome, it’s the bare minimum – it’s how a parliamentary democracy is supposed to work.

Renewing the Coronavirus Act is a dark moment for human rights, but we assure you that this fight isn’t over.

And momentum is building.

Thanks to our members and supporters’ fantastic work more than 40,000 people have so far signed Liberty’s petition to bin the Act.

More than 20,000 people used our tool to write to their MPs to demand it be scrapped. Thank you for everything you have put into this campaign.

The Act will be up for renewal in six months. We have built a movement against it, and we must continue.

From the outset of the pandemic, Liberty has kept watch on what the Government is doing and provided tools to empower everyone to defend their rights. This work also continues.

Our Advice and Information team is busy scrutinising the developing rules to provide the clear guidance we need to understand them.

Our journalists continue to investigate how the Government’s response is affecting already marginalised communities and give a voice to the voiceless in this crisis.
Our lawyers are reviewing the legality of the Government’s actions and stand ready to hold it to account.

Our campaigners are still lobbying MPs to make the case for change.

Our work is more vital than ever. Thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Martha Spurrier
