Health care for tens of millions of people in this country is on the line.
Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett has been notoriously critical of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and publicly condemned the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the bill in 2017.
The Supreme Court will begin to hear a case on Nov. 10th that could put an end to the ACA. Judge Barrett’s appointment to the bench puts this law in more danger than ever before.
Let’s be clear: we know the ACA doesn’t go nearly far enough. We all know that we must continue to fight for a system that truly guarantees health care to all: Medicare for All. But gutting the ACA in court would mark a return to the past of limitless insurance industry abuses – including denying coverage for patients with pre-existing conditions, impacting all 7 million Americans who have been infected with Covid-19.
We cannot go backwards. We need to keep building the movement for Medicare for All because we know that the ACA does not go far enough. We cannot rely on a health care system that is at the whims of the courts or private insurance corporations.
The GOP knows that Americans don’t want to lose their health care coverage. That’s why the first hearing on the ACA case was deliberately delayed until after the election. They know how outraged the American people will be over their plan to eliminate health coverage for tens of millions of people.
We can’t afford to lose the progress we have gained, especially through an undemocratic process like this. Not only is this nomination process illegitimate — but now Trump and Republicans have proposed a phony goal of protecting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions with a proposal that is full of massive loopholes and once again gives the insurance companies a green light to deny health coverage to up to millions.
In addition to Judge Barrett’s opinions on the ACA, her record on women’s health, worker’s rights, and racial and age discrimination is deeply troubling.
In order to protect health care for millions and continue our fight for Medicare for All, we all need to step up and put as much pressure on the Senate as possible to stop this rushed confirmation. It’s not too late.
