John,
President Trump is the most corrupt president in history. We counted the ways.
Trump has racked up more than 3,400 conflicts of interest since taking office, which CREW tracked meticulously during the last three and a half years. That’s an astoundingly high number, and it translates to two conflicts per day. That’s two reasons each day that the American people cannot trust that the president is making decisions in our interest, rather than his own.
These conflicts include Trump’s 500+ visits to his own properties, 141 members of Congress who have patronized Trump properties, 130 special interest group events at his businesses, 67 foreign trademarks granted to Trump’s business, and many more. Read CREW’s new report here, and share it with your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, or by forwarding this email.
New information about Trump’s tax returns shows that his businesses were losing tens of millions every year when Trump was elected president. He paid only $750 in federal taxes in 2016 and 2017, and reported more than $420 million in debts coming due soon. The fact that Trump’s businesses are struggling to break even may help explain Trump’s desperate attempts to cash in on the presidency.
Trump’s financial liabilities—and his failure to divest from his businesses—left him open to influence from those who are willing to give him a financial lifeline. That includes the banks that carry his debt, the special interests seeking to curry favor with him and the foreign officials who spend money at his hotels.
Trump’s corruption is not a theoretical problem. Trump’s corruption means that the people who are helping Trump stay afloat may have more sway in our government than we can understand or account for. Corruption like Trump’s is undemocratic, and it is a national security risk. We will keep sounding the alarm as long as is necessary, but we need your help. Please consider sharing our message with your friends and family.
Thank you for standing with us,
