America has a monopoly problem. As the American Economic Liberties Project’s recent "Ledger of Harms" shows, monopoly power lowers wages, reduces innovation and entrepreneurship, elevates income and regional inequality, undermines the free press, and perpetuates toxic systems of racial and class dominance. Strong antitrust law, as well as other governance and regulatory tools, is a critical way that Americans can protect ourselves from concentrated corporate power.
I’ll be advocating for big changes – the policies we need to break the power of trillion dollar titans and recover our freedom. To get a sneak peek, take a look at some essential reading on big tech!
Essential Big Tech Reading
- “Addressing Facebook and Google’s Harms Through a Regulated Competition Approach,” explains the policy choices that allowed Facebook and Google to develop a business model toxic to democracy and civil rights, and maps how “regulated competition” could rein in these giants.
- “Understanding Amazon: Making the 21st-Century Gatekeeper Safe for Democracy,” demystifies what Amazon's strategy is, the range of abuses it engages in, and the steps policymakers should take to eliminate its extraordinary and unprecedented gatekeeping power over American commerce.
- “Close to Home: How the Power of Facebook and Google Affects Local Communities,” analyzes the ways Facebook and Google harm local businesses and destroy local journalism, exposes the political strategies they use to extract subsidies from local communities, and details solutions – at both the federal and local level – to readjust the legal underpinning of this dangerous business model.
- "Amazon's Monopoly Tollbooth," reveals how Amazon is entrenching its monopoly grip on e-commerce, extracting more and more from small businesses, and expanding its dominance into logistics and advertising.
Warmly,
Zephyr
