Hey John,
John Henry here. I'm an organizer with Sunrise and I grew up in Virginia.
Right now, my home state sits with the rest of the South - facing devastating hurricanes, huge income inequality, covid spikes, and a growing force of white supremacy that is getting louder, bolder, and was even put on “standby” by the President during Tuesday’s debate.
It is days like these that my home feels impossible to save. But then I saw this:
Here in my own state there is a person running for Congress who understands my pain, who sees the systemic violence and racism in this country, and who is determined to fight for communities like mine! Qasim Rashid is that person, and he's runnning a transformative campaign to change Virginia forever.
That's why I'll be phone banking for him this Saturday. Can you join me?
Richmond, our biggest city, was the capital of the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee called this state home, and the first battle of the Civil War was fought right in Qasim's district. Our schools weren’t desegregated until the 1970s.
But Virginia is also the state that just flipped our entire legislature blue. There is so much promise here.
I need you to think about my home right now, think about what it would mean to elect Qasim, a human rights lawyer, who is himself fighting off racist dog whistles from his opponent Rob Wittman while he fights for the people. I need you to help us take another step in undoing the racist past of this country, and in pushing back against white supremacy.
I need you to join me this Saturday from 4-6pm EST to help elect Qasim Rashid so we can send a powerful message to the rest of the country. Help us defeat racism in the very place where the Civil War began.
See you Saturday,
John Henry, Sunrise
