Donald Trump, or as he likes to call himself, a self-made billionaire, paid just $750 in federal income tax the year he was elected, but conceivably worse: he paid no federal income tax at all in 11 of the 18 years the New York Times examined. If Trump had paid anywhere near his rightful taxes, they could have gone towards funding programs for advanced public education, universal health care, and actions on climate change that Republicans have so brazenly blocked while claiming we don’t have the funds.
Meanwhile, Trump’s 139 golfing trips as president have cost American taxpayers $141 million.
These tax returns only confirm what we’ve known all along: Donald Trump is a disgraceful crook who has never cared about the American people -- and he will run this country into the ground if it means he can hold on to power. But we can stop this tyrant in November by turning out voters in record-breaking numbers and electing a new roster of progressive leaders who will champion in a wave of change.
Trump has already dismissed the Times report as “fake news,” and we need to move fast if we’re going to hold him accountable this election. We can’t afford to fall behind as Trump uses his executive power to make a mockery of our electoral system and the lives of everyday Americans -- but sadly, that’s exactly where we find ourselves now.
Progressives like you know more than anyone that there is just too much at stake this election to stand by and watch. We must take advantage of this moment and make sure Trump’s reign in the White House ends with us.
