I’ll never forget the night last year that Donald Trump goaded his supporters into booing me and chanting, “Send her back!” Just moments ago, after Trump smeared me as “corrupt and crooked” at his rally here in my home state of Minnesota, his supporters responded with another all-too-familiar chant: “Lock her up!”

Trump didn’t limit his attacks to just me though, he went on a tirade about people who have lived and struggled like me and so many others in our country — refugees. “Biden will turn Minnesota into a refugee camp,” he said, naming my birth country of Somalia as one of the “most dangerous places in the world” where refugees are coming from, and inciting boos from the crowd.

I’m not surprised that this president would demonize and disparage people fleeing war and persecution, or that he’d attack a sitting member of Congress — he has a history of that behavior. But what I am shocked about is when people from Minnesota show that kind of cruelty because that’s not representative of the state I love and call home.

Now is the time to ramp up our get-out-the-vote operations and turn out the progressive voters in the Fifth District who will reject Trump’s hate and keep this state blue.
