Friend,
Last night's debate was a nearly unwatchable train wreck-- but it was no
accident . It was just the latest part of an ongoing effort to sabotage
our democracy.
Make no mistake: that debate was part of an overt attempt to
de-legitimize our electoral process and, ultimately, the results. The
strategy is not only to instill so much cynicism in the American people
that they simply stop paying attention—it also contains a dangerous ploy
to stoke division, violence, and chaos.
Here's their plan:
1. Convince people their votes don't matter and probably won't be
counted.
2. Make it as hard as possible to vote with voter ID laws, voter purges,
and Post Office delays.
3. Bury voters in a mountain of lies and vitriol so politics is just too
painful to watch and they check out.
4. Tell base voters that the only way you can lose is if the election is
stolen, setting the stage to stop ballot-counting if it looks like
you're going to lose.
It is impossible to overstate the dangers now looming, and our mission
to inform, inspire, and ignite change for the common good has never been
more necessary and vital.
"Fascism is at our door." That's what one lawmaker said in response to
Tuesday's night spectacle.
Our job at Common Dreams is to make sure people understand the forces at
work. They want power so they can enrich themselves at the expense of
everyday people. And the only way they can get it is if voters give up,
stay home, and let them steal it.
This is the most dangerous election of our lives. Our vow is to remain
vigilant at the gate. Can you help us today by supporting our efforts to
protect democracy?
