Presidential Debate 1 in the Books
|
That was a, well, interesting first round of the presidential debates. During Donald Trump's meltdown on national television, we saw a stark difference between him and Vice President Joe Biden in terms of temperament, honesty, and commitment to serving the American people. One reporter called Trump's performance an "avalanche of lying", while CNN viewers polled answered 2-1 that Biden won the debate.
|
Chair Morgan Carroll reacted after the debate, calling out Trump's constant lying and his disturbing call for white supremacists to "Stand Back" and "Stand By".
|
“I commend Vice President Joe Biden for keeping his cool and being the functioning adult in the room amidst an hour and a half of Donald Trump flailing, whining, interrupting, and lying. Donald Trump knows he can’t defend his record of 200,000 Americans dead from COVID-19 and a broken economy of his own making. What’s worse is that, when given the simplest question to denounce white supremacists, Trump took a pass. Colorado voters, and voters across this country, are tired of the lies and constant assault on our health care and freedoms by Donald Trump. Vice President Biden showed that he is the calm leader with a plan who will work to unite us. None of the noise Trump made can change his record of failure and corruption.”
Morgan also joined reporters on Denver7 last night to give her reaction to the debate. Click here to watch!

Updates and Fast Facts from the Biden-Harris Campaign!

Joe Biden's plan would create 7 million more jobs than Trump, according to one economic forecast
From Business Insider
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's economic agenda would lead to 7 million more jobs created compared to President Donald Trump's, according to a new analysis from Moody's Analytics, a research firm.
The study, conducted by Mark Zandi and Bernard Yaros, evaluated the economy's trajectory under four different scenarios. But it found that a Democratic sweep where Biden is elected and Democrats recapture the Senate would lead to a significant increase in federal spending. They assume it would be largely "deficit-financed," meaning the government racks up a bigger federal debt.
The spending, though, wouldn't be a drag on overall growth. Instead, 18.6 million jobs would be created during Biden's first term, and lift the average American's household after-tax income by $4,800. That's 7 million more jobs compared to a scenario where Trump is reelected and Republicans hold onto the Senate. Household incomes largely stay the same should the GOP control both the legislative and executive branches.

THIS WEEK ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL:
Conversations with Coloradans Who Rely on the ACA
John and state Rep. Kyle Mullica had a virtual conversation with Coloradans who rely on the Affordable Care Act for health care. They shared what it would mean if the Supreme Court abolished the ACA in a case scheduled for one week after the election. Overturning the ACA would mean an end to the Medicaid expansion Hickenlooper spearheaded as Governor and protections for 2.4 million Coloradans with pre-existing conditions.

Brewers Talk Small Business Recovery
On Friday, John visited Denver Beer Company and hosted a virtual conversation with breweries across the state to discuss the need to support small businesses in our recovery from COVID-19. Denver Beer Co., Atrevida Brewing, Weldwerks Greeley, Carver Brewing Company, and Spangalang Brewery shared updates from their regions of the state with John and talked about what help breweries and other small businesses need to weather the pandemic. The brewers agreed that more support for small businesses is needed, and that Washington needs a leader like John Hickenlooper to bring people together to get things done and support small businesses.

Hick Visits Grand Junction
On National Public Lands Day, John met with the Outdoor Recreation Coalition in Grand Junction and talked about the issues facing rural communities, protecting public lands and lowering health care costs while sipping beers at Ramblebine Brewery. Meet: Josh Trupin, one of our rockstar volunteers who serves on the Rules Committee! Josh was a national delegate in 2016 before being chosen for two terms on Washington State's state central committee and state executive committee. He was co-founder and first chair of the state's Economic Justice Caucus, and co-chaired the state's Resolutions and Platform Committee. Since moving to Fairplay in 2019, he has remained active, becoming a PCP, serving on the CDP's Rules Committee, and volunteering with the Park County Democrats.

Why do you volunteer for Democratic causes?
I volunteer for Democratic causes because progressive policies are the only way out of our current Republican-led situation. It can be tough living in a red county, but proclaiming and working for our values makes others feel less isolated and encourages them to fight as well.
What would you say to anyone who has thought about volunteering, but hasn't taken that first step?
Before I started volunteering, it seemed like a difficult step to take. In reality, local parties are welcoming and grateful for volunteers, and I've found that people who do the work are quickly treated the same as old-timers. Local races are where we build our bench and can make the most immediate difference in policies that affect our daily lives. There are so many opportunities for volunteers, too - if you feel weird talking to people, you can text bank or write postcards to neighbors. All efforts are valued!

Trump team using $300 million in taxpayer dollars to make us feel better about Covid-19
From CNN
Instead, Trump's latest ploy is to try to convince voters into believing he did a great job handling the virus — and the worst part is he's using our tax dollars to do this. As Politico recently reported, Trump's Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is moving quickly to roll out a $300 million-plus advertising campaign to "defeat despair" about Covid-19. The campaign will include celebrities like actor Dennis Quaid and singer CeCe Winans and Politico reported that HHS is said to be pursuing television host Dr. Mehmet Oz and musician Garth Brooks to take part as well.

A federal judge blocked William Perry Pendley from continuing to serve in that role. Pendley, who is officially deputy director of the BLM but has sat atop the agency's organizational chart since July 2019, served unlawfully for 424 days without Senate confirmation, U.S. District Judge Brian Morris said. The Trump administration immediately vowed to appeal the decision.

Join the Elbow Bumpers Club!
|
What's the Elbow Bumpers Club (formerly known as the High Fivers Club), you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?
Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!
