Friend,

Our politics have departed from a place where we could disagree about policy,
yet still see each other as fellow Americans who share a love for the same
country.

We have entered a new realm where we now see the “other side” as an
existential threat to all we care about. In this era, gaining and exercising
political power are all that seems to matter.

Last night’s “presidential debate” put on full display just how far we’ve
fallen.

The problem is: zero-sum politics fuels polarization that will eventually
destroy our democracy. We are seeing this before our eyes in the debate over
the Supreme Court and in the disinformation about this year’s election. It’s a
vicious and escalating cycle.

Welcome to the Doom Loop. We made a three-minute video about the doom loop:
what it is, how we got here, and most importantly, how we break it.Watch it here

As I wrote about in The Fulcrum <[link removed]>
on Friday: “The doom loop will continue to spiral out of control, if not for
the intervention of courageous leaders and different incentives.”Read more

While most Americans only see a big fight between both parties on the surface
of our politics, many of us are beginning to see the doom loop below the
surface and realizing that increasing division only serves those who profit
from it –– not We, the people; not theUnited States.

The movement for non-partisan political reform is about breaking the doom loop
before the doom loop breaks us. It’s about depolarizing our politics. It’s
about putting voters first.

Many say the time for reform is after the next big election, or the next big
political battle. But the nature of the doom loop is that there will always be
a “next” that is bigger than the last.

The time to reform and re-imagine our democracy is now.

If you agree, forward this note along to a few friends and start a
conversation: no matter the outcome of November’s election: what will you do ––
what will we do –– to break the doom loop and reform our politics?

Stay United,

Nick
