Looking ahead to
post-election scenarios
on climate legislation

With only weeks to go before an election that could dramatically change the makeup of our government, CCL VP for Government Affairs Danny Richter offers an assessment of former Vice President Joe Biden’s plan for climate change and what that might mean for carbon pricing.

The good news, Danny says, is that the Biden plan shows that “climate change is a priority at the highest levels of American politics.” And while the Democratic nominee’s plan does not specifically mention carbon pricing, Danny notes the plan talks about “an enforcement mechanism that will be based on the principle that polluters must bear the full cost of the carbon pollution they’re emitting.”

CCL Strategy Director Tony Sirna is also considering potential post-election outcomes and the approaches CCL would take under each of those scenarios. In a new blog post, Tony writes, “I know that many of us are thinking about what the election results might imply for CCL’s work.” Read his blog to find out.

As we await the results of an election that determines the direction our nation will take in the coming years, CCL plans to push forward on climate solutions in line with our values.

Other news this week:

BEST Act passes in House bill: The Better Energy Storage and Technology (BEST) Act, one of our supporting asks during June lobbying, was included in a bill the House passed last week. Read the backstory of how CCL helped get dozens of cosponsors on this legislation.

Makeover for UK carbon pricing? CCL Global Strategy Director Joe Robertson is one of the endorsers of a new report in Great Britain to explore how carbon pricing in that country might be redesigned to look more like fee and dividend. “The most efficient way to... repurpose whole economies to do more good, is a fair, effective, economy-wide price on carbon that builds clean local economies,” said Joe.

CCL on EcoRight podcast: CCL Conservative Outreach Director Jim Tolbert and Conservative Fellow Kelsey Grant are featured on the latest episode of the EcoRight Speaks podcast, a production of our friends at republicEn.org. They talked about the role of CCL’s Conservative Caucus in lobbying Republican members of Congress on climate change.

Latinx outreach on YouTube: Our Spanish language team recently posted two videos (here and here) with an appeal to the Latinx community that connects the message of Pope Francis in “Laudato Si” to the work of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. If you have Spanish-speaking friends, be sure to share with them.

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Take the “With malice toward none” pledge, an initiative from Braver Angels. Braver Angles is a citizens’ organization of red, blue and other Americans working for less rancor and more goodwill in our politics. The pledge’s goal is for us to regard our fellow citizens who vote differently with dignity and to recommit ourselves to renewed citizenship. After you take the pledge, share the pledge link on your social media and invite others to join you.

If you have more time: If you have a favorite brewery or winery, share with them the Brewers’ Climate Declaration or Wine Industry’s Climate Declaration, organized by Business Climate Leaders. Ask them to sign onto those declarations and encourage them to speak up to their members of Congress about how climate change is impacting their business.

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more.

Media: Taking on coal in Nigeria

It’s hard to solve a problem until you acknowledge it exists, and media coverage is an effective way to alert the public about something that needs fixing. David Michael “Mike” Terungwa, CCL’s regional coordinator in Africa, recently collaborated with other environmentalists in Nigeria to hold a press conference that called on the government to stop issuing coal mining licenses. At the press conference, covered by EnviroNews Nigeria, the activists said coal extraction is polluting their water and land and contributing to climate change. The press conference was held on Sept. 25, which was declared a Global Day of Climate Action to coincide with UN Climate week.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the media lever like Mike did, watch or read this training on Generating Media Coverage.
