This past Saturday, Judge Amy Coney Barrett was nominated to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Barrett would succeed the iconic Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had served since 1993.
We believe that Judge Barrett is an excellent successor to Justice Ginsburg. Here are three primary reasons:
- Qualified: Amy Coney Barrett has an impressive legal background. She was confirmed to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2017 and has continued teaching at Notre Dame Law School while sitting on the 7th Circuit. Like her mentor Justice Antonin Scalia, for whom she clerked, Judge Barrett is an originalist in how she approaches the interpretation of the Constitution. Judge Barrett proudly proclaimed at her recent Supreme Court nomination ceremony, “I love the United States, and I love the United States Constitution.”
- Esteemed: Amy Coney Barrett earned bipartisan support in her 2017 confirmation to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. And her fellow law clerks from her time clerking on the Supreme Court have uniformly praised and supported her, writing, “We are Democrats, Republicans, and independents ... yet we write to support the nomination of Professor Barrett ... a woman of remarkable intellect and character. She is eminently qualified for the job ... .”
- Relatable: Amy Coney Barrett thrives equally as judge, teacher, mom, and someone who respects life in actions, not just words—most prominently through her making the choice to adopt. The Barrett family is a beautiful and powerful witness, showing that families come in all shapes and sizes. An anecdote in her hometown paper said that while the Senate was voting to confirm Barrett for her circuit court judgeship, she was back home in South Bend trick-or-treating with her children. We need a woman like her on the Supreme Court.
Confirming Judge Barrett will not be easy. But we believe Judge Barrett will be a justice worth raising our voices for.
