Friends,

Did you watch the presidential debate last night with a pit in your stomach? Were you asking yourself when American politics devolved into such bullying and personal attacks?

I had trouble sleeping, but I found some comfort in reminding myself that, as Andrew often says: there’s a lot happening in the world that feels out of our control, but we can still make a difference in people’s lives and that’s all that should matter.

Andrew came home yesterday without the usual spring in his step and when I asked what was wrong he told me what it was like to talk to Sama Ali’s father at the seven-year-old’s funeral that afternoon after he had watched a truck mow her down in the crosswalk on her scooter. It reminded me of the recent Saturday night where Andrew got out of bed after midnight to join firefighters at the five-alarm fire consuming multiple houses. “What good does it do to have you there?” I always ask.

There are a lot of things I don’t understand about his job, but what I do understand is that Andrew always wants to help. He wants to listen to your story, to understand your problem, and to solve it. He has a selfless calling to try his hardest to make things right for you, no matter who you are.

The debate last night was another reminder of how divided we’ve become and how messy politics can be. The president said some disgraceful things, refusing to condemn white supremacy and hate. His behavior didn’t surprise me, but it starkly contrasted with the integrity, character and heart that our State Senator puts back into politics every day. He is a uniting force who fights for each and every one of us.

Andrew’s facing a tough re-election this November and he can use all of our help. Please join me in supporting the campaign in any way that you can.
