Right-wing groups are panicking because they can't convince young people that trickle-down economics works. Their attempts to justify slashing taxes on the rich, deregulation of corporations, and lowering the wages of workers aren't exactly catching fire with young voters, and it's easy to see why. Trickle-downers have never understood what motivates people (beyond their own greed) – let alone how young people see the economy.
It’s no wonder why right-wing, trickle-down groups like the Washington Policy Center (WPC), Turning Point USA, PragerU, and the Ayn Rand Institute have to turn to propaganda to try to attract younger generations to buy into their misguided ideologies. Just look at these absurd attempts by WPC – which proudly announced it has a multi-million dollar budget – to connect with young people:
These attempts are just plain laughable. Imagine paying for a multi-million dollar advertisement campaign just to get dunked on by the people you paid to show those ads. They have to realize their ideas are bad, and it doesn't matter how much you pay to show them to young people – we aren't buying it.
Let’s also take a moment to acknowledge the hypocrisy of these organizations. In fact, WPC and the Ayn Rand Institute took between $350,000 and $1,000,000 in PPP loans from the government while evangelizing about the ineptitude of government and the powers of the free market.
Here’s the honest truth about these ads: Free markets haven’t done the things they claim. And they obviously haven’t destroyed racism, poverty, disease, or climate change – those things all still exist and are devastating our communities. In fact, unregulated markets have made things worse. In the last 45 years, mass deregulation of the powerful and tax cuts for the ultra-rich have led to the largest redistribution of wealth in American history – $50 trillion from everyday people, right into the pockets of the absurdly wealthy.
Income inequality is at an all-time high. Millions of people lack affordable health care as a pandemic rages. Racial tensions are being stoked by a bigoted trickle-down president. And climate change is reaching the point of no return. There’s no such thing as a market free of regulation. Markets are either regulated by governments in the interest of the public good, or they’re regulated by massive corporations in the interest of themselves. What we need now is better regulation and more investment in public goods – not more corporate control.
