John, let's be real:
Last night's presidential debate was unwatchable. And there was one reason why.
Trump's debate performance was by design. He and the entire Republican Party have all but given up on trying to reach voters or win a popular majority. They know they have no realistic hope of convincing a majority of Americans to vote for them.
Instead, Trump and Republicans have decided to focus all of their energy on delegitimizing the election, attacking democracy itself, and explicitly encouraging violent white nationalist groups to intimidate voters.
Trump is operating from a position of immense weakness. His goal is to promote cynicism and despair. We cannot succumb to it.
I encourage you to translate whatever emotion you're feeling right now to action, and to organize like our lives depend on it.
Maybe that means joining WFP for a shift to call or text voters in swing states. Maybe it means picking a WFP champion running for local office near you and seeing what you can do to help them win. Or maybe it means chipping in one final contribution before tonight’s end-of-quarter deadline at midnight to turbocharge our get out the vote efforts in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Whatever you can do, I hope you can join me in recommitting to doing all we can to defeat Trump and Trumpism over these next five weeks, and for as long as it takes until we win the transformational change we need.
Sincerely,
Maurice Mitchell
