Hi John,
It’s strange to say, but after a yearlong campaign for Congress, I am no longer a candidate. A little over a month ago, I faced a homophobic smear campaign that made national headlines. And now, more LGBTQ candidates are facing even more egregious attacks. If you can donate today to power Victory Fund’s work to defend them, it’s appreciated!
When the stories against me first broke, Victory Fund went into overdrive. They encouraged me to fight the attacks and stay in the race, supporting my campaign as it navigated tricky political waters, and built a media response to defend my name. They called out media outlets and political opponents who rolled out tired homophobic tropes about gay men as pedophiles and sexual deviants. They spoke with our allies to explain that these attacks were homophobic and that it was critical to stand by me and not let the politics of destruction win. Victory Fund worked behind-the-scenes with reporters investigating the attacks, provided talking points, and helped expose those who falsely accused me. Without Victory Fund on my team, my campaign – and maybe even my career – would have been destroyed.
If Victory Fund is going to defend all their endorsed candidates – over 300 of them – they need to raise $20,000 by midnight. Will you make a generous donation to help them hit their End of Quarter goal tonight?
Unfortunately, LGBTQ candidates like me are still held to a standard that no heterosexual cisgender candidate would face. It’s a sad fact that when some voters are bombarded with homophobic dog whistles about an LGBTQ candidate, it can stop them from supporting their campaign. No matter their policies or their plans or how hard they’ve worked for the people they want to serve.
We’re already seeing these tactics pop up again. Gina Ortiz Jones was attacked by the National Republican Congressional Committee for having a woman partner. Jon Hoadley is facing a barrage of attacks from Fred Upton, twisting past blog posts and calling him a “pedo sex poet.” LGBTQ candidates in Florida, Michigan and elsewhere are facing homophobic attacks. Our trans candidates are constantly under attack for running while out and proud.
My results were disappointing not only because I lost, but because the loss sets a bad precedent that these types of attacks will pay off – and so, bigots will try again. I am proud of the race I ran and am deeply grateful for Victory Fund’s support, but now we need to win. Fortunately, we have many more chances to defeat these tactics in 2020. Will you stand with Victory Fund and LGBTQ candidates like me against this bigotry?
We can prove these tactics don’t work – the rainbow wave depends on it.
Thanks again for standing with us,
Alex Morse
