Today, the GOP is in charge
In 2010, Republicans poured money into state elections—and scooped up more than a thousand seats once held by Dems. Now, the GOP controls 30 state legislatures, and it's using that state-level power to make our democracy weaker.
One of the GOP’s favorite party tricks? Drawing rigged voting maps that make it easier for Republicans to win. This is called “gerrymandering,” and it’s a serious problem.
- Gerrymandering has given Republicans 16+ unearned seats in Congress
- And it’s silenced millions of American voters in the process
- The next round of redistricting starts in 2021. That gives us 2 years to flip things around!

Another GOP pastime: chipping away at the right to vote—especially for people of color.

- These laws target minorities, who usually vote for Dems
- Wisconsin’s ID law may have affected 300K+ people—and Trump won the state by just 23K votes!

How Dems can restore our democracy
Since 2016, the Flippable community helped elect 79 Dems in pivotal state districts. From helping pass automatic voter registration in Washington to leading the fight for Medicaid expansion in Virginia, bringing healthcare coverage to 400,000 people, these inspiring leaders are making a big difference in their states. Our 2018 candidates’ victories have already shifted the balance of power in Colorado, Minnesota, North Carolina, and New Hampshire, where the GOP used its position to block progressive bills and pass anti-democratic legislation.
We aren't slowing down. With your help, we plan to flip even more seats in 2019. We’ll focus on game-changing states where the GOP’s unfair voting laws have the biggest national impact.
