The seven-month obsession with COVID-19 has illuminated totalitarian tendencies in elected leaders unlike anything in recent memory. Certainly there needed to be prudent precautions in the beginning when no one knew what to expect from the virus. Many governors and mayors, however, have used the pandemic to enact mandates that most medical and science professionals now insist are not in the public interest.
